Chicago Hospitality Industry Backs The Bid

Posted on August 26th, 2009 by

chicago_olympics2016The countdown to the final decision concerning which city (Madrid, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro or Chicago) will host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games comes to a head October 2 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Then we’ll find out if Chicago will make the big move from “Candidate City” to “Host City.” Working toward the outcome is the “Chicago Hospitality Backs the Bid Task Force,” a grassroots effort comprised of leading names in the hospitality and visitor industries here in the city and nationwide.

Who is the “hospitality industry”? They are the people charged with making sure Chicagoans and visitors maintain an even keel day and night. It’s the waiter at the restaurant; the tour operator; the hotelier, or concierge; event planners; limo drivers; the linen companies who serve the hotels their starched sheets and aprons to the restaurants. It’s the whole force of workers at Navy Pier, McCormick Place, Millennium Park, Lincoln Park Zoo and more.

Most would agree Chicago is one of the more hospitable cities in the world and there is a force of people out there representing it as such every day. Now that community is stepping up to support the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. You can do so right now by signing up at www.2016petition.com or come out to support Chicago’s bid for Olympic glory at the Back the Bid Rally, being held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m.

Concierge Preferred has partnered with Chicago 2016 to showcase the strong support for the Games within Chicago’s hospitality industry, its partners and supporters. It’s time for the hospitality industry to make a final push for the Games by making sure every member of every team in the city puts their name on the dotted line in support of Chicago’s bid.

Monument to Multimedia

Posted on August 26th, 2009 by

There is a new boutique in town when it comes to luxury theaters: SCREEN at the Wit Hotel. It’s not just for movies; you can see anything: TV shows, games, award shows and corporate projects. CP sent over a feeler to catch the premier of the latest iteration of ‘Top Chef,’ Bravo network’s hit show where chefs struggle through adversity en route to being handed their own restaurant. Not sure if it was the comfortable environs—recliners and lounges—or the Wit’s chefs and sommelier who also attended and added real life commentary to the show, but we like this place.

Not being a film producer with a heft budget won’t hurt you either. We’re talking about prices like $12.50 per head for 40 people to take over this monument to multimedia; if you want a solo show or a special date night, things get a little pricier, but you only live once—right? Only problem is we’re torn: The Primetime Emmy’s or Monday Night Football?

Fresh Chips at Stanley’s

Posted on August 20th, 2009 by

Stanley’s (1558 N. Elston Ave., 773-276-8050) is already well-known as an oasis of wonderful produce, filled with organic or regularly-farmed fruits and vegetables. New additions have expanded Stanley’s to offer a deli with hand-made sausages and, adding a process to the usual raw foods, a potato chip maker.

Like some Wonka gadget out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, employees just insert the potato and watch the Jiminy Chips machine peel, slice and cook the chips on spot. The attendant does have some use, seasoning and bagging the delicious end-result. Made in-store, Stanley’s bags orginal, sea salt, BBQ, marshmallow, ranch, chocolate and sweet potato. Want a special bag made on the spot? Just ask.
