Pop-Up Designer Sample Sale Meets Battle of the Boutiques

Posted on February 25th, 2010 by

We keep hearing about the economic impact on retail, but I’m not here to talk about the obvious; you’ve already been mourning the loss of your fave boutique or go-to dress spot.

Enter Re.Stock Shop, a traveling sample sale in Chicago that eliminates rent and overhead, thus providing you with amazing deals on designer and overstock merchandise.

This is a concept we’re starting to see all over the country, in fact, it was just back in December that I wrote about the Rock and Shop Pop-Up Sale concept that took place outside of Bice restaurant.

The next Re.Stock Shop event is popping up this weekend (Feb. 27 and 28) at 1022 W. Armitage. While designers change on a monthly basis, you can expect to rifle through some Ted Baker (see photo), Le Coq Sportif and Modern Amusement, among others. (more…)

The Big Stars Come to The Goodman Theater

Posted on February 24th, 2010 by

The Goodman Theater isn’t messing around.  After launching the season with Brian Dennehy on a double bill of playwrights O’Neill (never a joy ride) and Beckett (a long cry from last year’s opener, Animal Crackers), artistic director Robert Falls brings audiences the world premiere of Brett C. Leonard’sThe Long Red Road”.

Directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman (who took home an Oscar starring in “Capote”), this hard-hitting show – maddeningly inert at times – is volatile in the best way, causing one to question not only one’s assumptions about the kind of human relationships it depicts, but the exercise of theater itself.

While this brutal examination of tortured lives does end with an intimation of positive change (or at least perseverance), it’s a rough ride. Tom Hardy, an Englishman known better across the pond (though upcoming film roles alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron should change that) is a slight man of medium height, the perfect physical type to play Sam, a little man with a gargantuan drinking problem who never stands a chance of redemption.

All swagger, forever swinging out at the world, Sam is more pathetic than frightening. Hardy brings a compelling mix of vehemence and vulnerability to the role, What’s more, in a part that allows an actor to go all out being “real”, Hardy throws himself nakedly to the task, digging deep rather than tossing of the the spittle-flinging, tic-studded performance so many actors fall for.

Corporate Takeover was Never so Funny or Musical!

Posted on February 24th, 2010 by

Tragedy is funny. And when you set it along the docks in 1800-something (you know, about the time steamships were making waves) in a harbor town, New Portsmouth, it’s even funnier. Throw a gender confused family, a fourteen-year-old girl longing for carrots, and a metaphorical crazy clock lady in the mix and the story gets interesting. Now add in some well scored music and you’ve got yourself a genuinely fun tale.

And so it goes in “The Timeless Tale of New Portsmouth … A New Musical” playing now through March 5 at Donny’s Skybox Theatre at The Second City. Born out of the twisted, maritime drenched minds of Second City’s Musical Improv Program graduates, “New Portsmouth” makes great use of produce based sexual innuendos and satirically spears future progress like Kraft Singles and “a telegraph where you hear voices and horse drawn carriages without the horses.”

New Portsmouth is an east coast harbor town filled with discontent but outwardly happy with its way of life. Its industry is its docks run by Roman Witherweather, a curmudgeon with the best intentions and a violent fear of change. He loves one of his daughters, tolerates his wife and barely puts up with his other daughter, especially when she falls in love with one of “The Corporates” from Chicago who come to town to make the future happen as soon as possible.

Eighth Blackbird Benefit at The Publican

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by

Sure, benefit events may seem like a dime a dozen these days but this one definitely ranks up there in the not-to-missed category.

To wit: Chicago’s own Paul Kahan of blackbird, Avec, The Publican and Big Star joins up with orange-clogged celebrity chef Mario Batali for an evening of food, libations and live music on March 15 to benefit eighth blackbird, a Grammy Award-winning sextet that debunks the myth that contemporary music is limited to only those with highbrow tastes.

Did we mention there’ll be a special performance by Glenn Kotche of Wilco with Batali on guitar?

The evening gets started at 5:30 pm with a concert by eighth blackbird at the Packer Schopf Gallery highlighting pieces from the group’s tour last year. Then the party heads over to The Publican at 7 pm for hors d’oeuvres and Champagne and the opening of the silent auction.

The musical fun starts up again with the five-course dinner with beer and wine pairings prepared by Kahan and Batali with each course inspired by pieces from the previous concert. Now that’s music to our ears and mouths.

Reservations required; tickets can be purchased online for $250. Visit the eighth blackbird website for more information, and make sure to follow @eighthblackbird on Twitter.

Friday Night Picks: “Shutter Island” & Catch 35

Posted on February 19th, 2010 by

Director Martin Scorsese and his long-time muse, Leonardo DiCaprio, tag-team once again for the suspense thriller, “Shutter Island” (previous collaborations include “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” and “The Departed”). The film takes place in an insane asylum off the coast of Massachusetts where DiCaprio, a U.S. Marshall, is sent to investigate the disappearance of a dangerous patient (see trailer below).

A story like this deserves the right setting, so take your Friday night movie to the ShowPlace ICON theatre and indulge in unique features like VIP seating with appetizers and cocktails. In addition to the luxurious seating and tables, the high quality surround sound will kick the experience up a few notches.

Even after the film is over, you might find yourself wanting a little East Coast comfort food. Since you’re already splurging on a quality movie experience, why not round out the night with some seafood?

Catch 35 in the Loop has a menu equipped with an abundance of seafood, like their Maine lobster with mushroom ravioli or the blackened Block Island swordfish with roasted red pepper-chipotle sauce. Dining with a picky date? They’ve also got a wide selection of premium cut steaks.

Check back for more dinner-and-a-movie picks around Chicago, pairing some of our favorite restaurants with everything from blockbusters to Indie flicks.

Dine Luxe for Less: Chicago Restaurant Week 2010

Posted on February 19th, 2010 by

Lately, I’ve been looking forward to celebrating a special time of year… No, not Valentine’s Day. Nor President’s Day.

Today marks Chicago’s 3rd Annual Restaurant Week, sponsored by the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau (CCTB), featuring more than 170 participating restaurants (see full list) offering three-course, prix-fixe lunches and dinners for $22 and $32, respectively (excluding tax, beverages and gratuity).

The event has been extended to 10 days, running through February 28. Restaurant Week is a Foodie’s (10-day) SuperBowl Sunday, an opportunity to dine luxe for less at the city’s finest 5-star establishments.

Now, I must admit: I’m a Chicago Restaurant Week virgin. As such, I’ve staked my claim (via OpenTable) at establishments that seemingly combined equal parts value, cuisine and service.

I’m looking forward to lunching at La Madia (which includes a glass of wine) and tucking into a dry aged steak amid the mahogany-trimmed walls of the classic Capital Grille. Accordingly, you can’t go wrong with Japonais’ swanky atmosphere and David Burke’s Kobe Beef Sashimi (pictured, right). I plan to find out for myself.

It’s time for the opening kickoff, and I’m on the receiving end. Stay tuned!

Not sure which of the 170+ restaurants to try first? Make sure to check out the Chicago Restaurant Week website, where you can let the chef decide! Click on the little guy and he’ll give you a recommendation.

They’ve also got a long list of featured recipes from restaurants all over the city–so you can take on Riva’s duck confit salad long after Restaurant Week.
