A Ballet of Betrayal: Othello

Posted on October 14th, 2009 by

Fabrice Calmels & April Daly in OthelloThe Joffrey Ballet is opening their 2009-2010 season with the midwest premiere of Othello, a full-length story ballet written by Chicago’s own Lar Lubovitch and based on the classic tale of jealousy and betrayal.

See for yourself October 14-25 at the Auditorium Theatre, and check out this video of some of the dancers!

Tickets are priced from $25-$145, and are available at the Joffrey Ballet box office (10 E. Randolph St.), the Auditorium Theatre box office (50 E. Congress Parkway), online, or by calling (800) 982-2787.

Welcome Home, Garrett Popcorn!

Posted on October 14th, 2009 by

Garrett Popcorn has a lot to celebrate: not only is this their 60th year of bringing all the crunchy goodness we love, they’re also gearing up for the grand opening of a brand new location!

Garrett PopcornThey’re counting down the days until this Thursday, October 15, when they’ll celebrate their return to Michigan Avenue (now at 625 N. Michigan Ave.). They’ll be handing out FREE small bags of their signature Chicago Mix from 10:00 a.m.-noon (or until they run out).

That’d be enough for us to show up–but they didn’t stop there: Everyone in line will receive “Scratch and Win” cards and the chance to win FREE one gallon tins, 60th Anniversary commemorative T-shirts and soft drinks, as well as coupons for 15% or 20% off!

Long story short: at this anniversary party, you get the gifts.

Sadly, there’s a chance of rain on Thursday, but the folks at Garrett Popcorn are a few steps ahead: they’ll provide ponchos while supplies last! Give us a poncho and a Halloween tin of caramel corn and we’ll sit outside all day all morning… Don’t forget to check out @garrettpopcorn on Twitter!

Head Up, Chicago. Big Shoulders. Next Big Thing?

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 by

Yes, for supporters of Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games, it’s a tough moment. A whole lot of us worked to make 2016 a year for the history books, but Chicago was just eliminated from the running in the first round of voting during the IOC bid decision process in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Everyone at Chicago 2016 and in city, state and federal government should hold their heads high. They have written a new book on how to handle a bid and Chicago will turn its boundless collective energy into the next big thing. Want to start throwing ideas out there?

Thanks to the entire staff at Concierge Preferred, as well. They’ve worked on the clock, and off, to support the bid and heads up, Chicago.  The finest points of our city and our country have been showcased to the world thanks to this process and we will quickly rise from this momentary setback.

Thanks again and hearty congratulations to the host city of the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games, whosoever it should be (won’t be Tokyo; either Madrid or Rio at this point).

Chicago Performers Light Up Copenhagen Nightlife

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 by

It’s a little strange, if you think about it, being in Denmark with so many reminders of Chicago popping up around every corner.

Back home in Chicago, both my business partner, Mike Magnusson, and myself visit Mike Ditka’s Restaurant all the time, and ‘Da Coach has been a big supporter of Chicago for a long time and is four-square behind Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Games. Besides the prime rib nachos, one of our favorite things about Ditka’s is the talented singing of Johnny Vincent.eddyclearwater A big guy with a heart of gold, he can do Frank [Sinatra] and he can do Louis [Armstrong] and he does Johnny Vincent very well, too. (In the photo above, Mr. Vincent is the garrish gentleman in the middle.)

We were also treated to some high level Chicago blues courtesy of Eddy Clearwater (pictured here performing in Copenhagen in photo Sept. 30). “The Chief” of Chicago blues absolutely rocked the house with a mix of performing styles. This really is the trip of a lifetime. Will check in again soon; also, follow  me on Twitter: @Tim_OMalley.

We Will Win the Bid

Posted on September 3rd, 2009 by

The Back the Bid Rally has begun! We’re at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Chicago and…

Our first speaker is Tim O’Malley of Concierge Preferred and if you’re looking for reasons to back Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games, talk to Tim–he’s got plenty of them.

He began by introducing local Olympic athletes to a rousing applause from the Back the Bid! crowd. Now he says “WHEN WE WIN THE BID…”

“315,000 full-time jobs and $22.5 billion dollars sound pretty good, especially in this economy,” O’Malley said at his speech. Hosting Olympics isn’t only a boon to the hospitality industry, who will “get to serve the world,” or the fun loving fans who’ll cheer on their nation’s athletes. “Since the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, every city except Athens has made money and moved their cities to a  better place.”
