Looking to explore Chicago like a local? Mark Kraemer, concierge at the 260-plus room Hotel Palomar in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, is your go-to guy.
“Growing up in Beverly on the South Side, I’ve been in the city my entire life,” Mark says. “It’s what I love most about my job, helping uncover a new aspect of the city for my guests to enjoy.”
After graduating from DePaul University in Lincoln Park, Mark got his start in the hospitality industry by working as maître d’ in legendary restaurants including Michael Jordan’s (currently LaSalle Power Co.) and the former Hudson Club before moving into a management position at Rhapsody in the Loop.
“To succeed in the restaurant business, you need to be able to spin a lot of plates,” he says. “From guest service and an attention to detail to the deadline pressure – you either have the hospitality gene or you don’t.”
While at Rhapsody, Mark was in daily communication with concierges and it was then that he realized his skill set would translate over to the concierge profession. After an industry friend told him that there was a concierge position available at the Hotel Allegro, Mark stopped by for an interview and was hired on the spot.
During his six year tenure as concierge at the Hotel Allegro, Mark received numerous accolades including multiple “Star of the Industry” nominations from the Illinois Hotel Association and being named Allegro Hotel’s “Employee of the Year”, before being asked by the corporate office to be a part of the opening team of the Hotel Palomar in March 2010. Mark’s already been named that property’s “Employee of the Year”, too.
What tops Mark’s list of things to do in Chicago? “I want to showcase Chicago properly to my guests and one of the best ways to do that is by encouraging them to venture into the city’s diverse neighborhoods like Andersonville or Bucktown,” he says.
One of Mark’s favorite spots in the city is Queen’s Landing, the area between Buckingham Fountain and Lake Shore Drive. “Chicago’s public parks are gorgeous no matter what time of year,” he says. “A stroll through Millennium and Grant Park’s should definitely be on any visitor – or locals – list.”
If you’re looking for a romantic day or traveling with kids, he recommends Lincoln Park Zoo and grabbing a bite at nearby Mon Ami Gabi or Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders.
Mark’s also an avid Chicago sports fan, so if you’re looking for inside-tips for an authentic game-day experience, he’s the perfect resource. “Whether you’re looking for the best spots to watch the game outside the stadium or to tailgate like a local, sports in this town just a part of who we are and really add to the visitor experience,” he says.
He’s also quite passionate about food! From celebrity chefs to Michelin star restaurants, Chicago has made quite an impression on the culinary scene the last few years. Whether you’re looking for fine dining, hip and trendy or just a casual, local spot, there’s something for everyone and Mark can help his guests discover exactly what they are looking for.

Bears fans unite! Timothy O’Toole’s is ready to play host to your next rowdy outing and maybe send you into cardiac arrest (joking, of course).
Every Bears game day, the Pub will challenge guests to something they’ve donned “Da Super Fan Challenge,” a mean old-fashioned food eating competition. For $29.99, fans are faced with the challenge of finishing a platter including a half-slab of baby back ribs, ten extra spicy chicken wings, a Polish sausage sandwich, an Italian beef sandwich, two pounds of French fries, and a jumbo-sized 23-ounce Miller Lite. And there’s an added bonus: if you finish the monster meal in under 30 minutes, it’s yours for free! Not a bad deal.
Additionally, on Tuesday, October 18, Timothy O’Toole’s will be celebrating Da Coach’s 72nd birthday with its “Ditka Day” celebrations. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., fans will be treated to specials galore—$1 off all domestic bottles and drafts—and will have the opportunity to take on Da Super Fan Challenge. All guests in Bears gear will receive a free Ditka ‘stache—sounds like a party you won’t want to miss!

Counting the days until Monday night football? We have another event for you to pencil in your planner, and while it involves the Chicago Bears, it has nothing to do with a playing field or television set.
On Monday, September 20, see your favorite Bears players in aprons instead of jerseys at Morton’s Celebrity Server Night with Charles Tillman and Friends at Morton’s famed Wacker Place location. You’ll have a chance to mingle with Tillman and some of his teammates during a reception and silent auction before setting into a hearty four course dinner that includes Morton’s favorites such as tuna tartare, mini crab cakes, double cut filet mignon and rich New York Cheesecake. During dinner—Tillman will be helping with server duties— bid on items from a live auction, entertainment for a good cause. Proceeds will benefit the Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation, which provides opportunities and resources to over one million Chicago-area children and their families who are in need.
Tickets are priced at $250 per guest. For further information, please contact Jessica Geisinger at 312.201.0464 or jessica_geisinger@mortons.com.
