Throughout this decade, the brainy Chicago pianist and composer Ryan Cohan has emerged as one of the city’s most powerfully
expressive musicians. He has done so behind two of the most imposing trumpet players in mainstream jazz: Orbert Davis (in Davis’s quintet) and Jon Faddis (in his tenure leading the Chicago Jazz Ensemble). But although more people may have seen Cohan in those contexts, it has been his own albums – the 2001 Here And Now and the 2007 One Sky – that have proved the originality of his writing and the strength of his musicality. Cohan’s prowess as a writer has grown in tandem with the power of his playing; each new album offers new revelations.
Now comes Another Look (Motéma), released Tuesday; it features Cohan’s outstanding local quartet augmented by percussion giant Steve Kroon and by the flamboyant vibraphonist Joe Locke, who travels to Chicago to join Cohan and company for the weekend’s official CD-release performances. Locke’s line have flash and pizzazz, but also an unforced lyricism that underlies his infectious enthusiasm. And when he solos, you can’t take your eyes off him. He tenses visibly on tight passages. He jumps back after a complicated passage, as if the instrument had burned him, and then rocks back for the next phrase. He mutters his improvised lines under his breath as he plays them, then fixes the audience with a wide grin and glittering eyes.
In this music, you can almost think of Locke as the id to Cohan’s superego: a high-flying complement to the pianist’s own brand of controlled excitement when he solos. (Cohan reports that in arranging the smart and supple compositions for this album, he “was hearing vibes in the front line. Specifically, I heard Joe Locke, whose playing and writing I have admired for a long time. His voice seemed a natural fit.” The album benefits from that synergy.) The rest of the band comprises rock-solid bassist Lorin Cohen, saxophone maven Geof Bradfield, and explosive drummer Kobie Watkins. They play the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, Friday from 9 till 1 and Saturday from 8 till midnight.

With Senator Harry Reid and soon-to-be reality star Rod Blagojevich issuing their apologies, it’s clear we are far from a post-racial world. But anyone of color knows that. And thank God our theater artists haven’t forgotten, either.
Playwright Tanya Barfield explores racial identity through the travails of a mixed couple in her Pulitzer-nominated “Blue Door,” making its Chicago premiere at Victory Gardens Theater.
Actually, the exploration falls on Lewis after his white wife leaves him and he’s visited by family ghosts, all portrayed by a single actor. These visitations raise the specter of Lewis’ dissociation from his race and remind audiences — black, white, or other–that history may not be destiny, but it never leaves us alone.
“Blue Door” with be at the Victory Gardens Theater from January 22-February 28. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 773- 871-3000.

Once you’ve met all the holiday character and taken a turn on each of the rides, you might want to check out some of the entertainment options at Navy Pier Winter WonderFest, beginning Friday, Dec. 4. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. that day, magician Dennis Watkins will be performing hourly shows, perfect for all ages!
Watkins is no stranger to the Navy Pier stage; he’s been performing at Navy Pier for years and speaks highly of the continually diverse and large crowds: “At the Pier you have tourists, families, people in on business… it’s a lot of fun to perform there.”
Watkins has been practicing magic his entire life; he’s a third-generation magician and grew up making cards float and pulling rabbits out of hats.
He says the true magic in Chicago happens in the unique and inventive theater, “I love Chicago theater. There is fantastic theater all the time.”
When he isn’t entertaining crowds or checking out the newest original theater production, Watkins says the fun continues with some live Chicago music. When it comes to the music scene in Chicago, he says, “There is alwasys something exciting going on!”

Of all the activities at Navy Pier Winter WonderFest, from fast-paced rides to the classic carousel, one of the tastiest has to be the Pepsi Create-a-Cookie Cottage.
Armed with red, green, and white frosting, plenty of sprinkles, and soft-but-crunchy sugar cookies, kids can create treats to enjoy here at the Winter WonderFest or take them home for later. From what we could tell, very few cookies made it home in once piece!
We stopped by to see some of Navy Pier’s finest (and smallest) chefs in action, and picked out a few of our favorite cookies (below).
Our first decorator went with Santa’s hat (and just a little bit of sprinkles), our second went with a simple tree motif, and the third very carefully created a Christmas tree ornament. Once the chefs had sampled their creations, they all agreed, they were as beautiful as they were tasty!

While the Create-a-Cookie Cottage is by far the most creative source for sweets at Navy Pier Winter WonderFest, there are several other delectable options also available: check out Chicago’s own Garrett Popcorn, Ryba’s Fudge, and other carnival classics like funnel cake, churros, and cotton candy!
