The polar vortex has riddled the country with cabin fever, irritability is at an all time high, and the 13th Annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival has arrived right on time to save the day.
With an expected 10,000 guests and over 1,000 performers the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival is the largest of its kind. It makes complete sense that the best sketch comedy groups in the world visit Chicago for two weeks of laughs when we are the home of comedy institutions like Second City, iO, and ComedySportz. Expect groups coming as far away as London like Foil Arms & Hog and more nationally-recognized groups such as Boat and Siblings of Doctors, which features Danny Pudi from NBC’s “Community.”
Of course you can expect great local acts such as GayCo, A Twerk in Progress, and The Cupid Players, which features the festival’s founder Brian Posen.
When Brian Posen’s musical failed to launch at the Theater Building Chicago he kept his commitment with the venue and put on the first Chicago Sketch Fest in it’s place in 2002. Initially running for seven weeks, the event now takes place over two weekends and the name changed to Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival.
Often confused with improvisational comedy, sketch differs in that everything is scripted and written and rewritten into short vignettes. A sketch can range from being a monologue to a musical performance with the common theme being making the audience laugh.
Stage 773 at 1225 W Belmont Ave is hosting the 13th Annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival until Jan. 19. For more information visit http://www.chicagosketchfest.com/.
