The dreary, grey days of winter are over and spring has officially sprung! The Annual Macy’s Flower Show will leave visitors wonder-struck and instantly cheery with stunning floral architecture, rolling landscapes and specialty gardens bursting with color, fragrance and imagination.
From March 27-April 10, visitors can take a guided tour of the floral exhibits at Macy’s on State Street with one of the University of Illinois’ Extension Master Gardeners and learn about the flowers and plants and how the exhibits were created. Or, head up to the sixth floor China department on April 2 and 9 at 2:30 p.m. for the all-new Container Gardening Demonstrations with U of I’s Master Gardeners.
Get inspired for a wedding, special event, or just to spruce up a space in your home with the Bouquet of the Day feature from America’s top floral designers. Five different floral design companies will be individually showcasing their floral tour de force on different days during the Annual Macy’s Flower Show.
In honor of the upcoming Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Macy’s Flower Show is paying tribute by featuring Royal Wedding-themed tabletop displays from Lenox and Marchesa by Lenox.
In addition to the celebration of flowers and the welcoming of spring, guests can be entertained with cooking and gardening demonstrations, bird watching tips from Lincoln Park Zoo experts and opera and a capella performances at the Artist Marketplace.
During the Flower Show, guests can enjoy special menu items created by some of Macy’s Culinary Council Chefs like Todd English’s Asparagus Frites, Tim Scott’s Asian Chop Salad with Spicy Miso Dressing and Crab Cakes by Michael Bernstein. There are also special offers for those who opt to dine at one of the restaurants located within Macy’s. Those who dine at the Walnut Room on the seventh floor will receive a complimentary Lemon Souffle with the purchase of an entrée. At the Marketplace, a more casual and varied dining option, diners will receive a complimentary fountain beverage with any purchase of $6 or more.
For the ultimate Flower Show experience, purchase a Floral Fantasy Package for $40 that includes a $25 Macy’s gift card, a glass of sparkling wine at the Wine Bar in the Walnut Room, a souvenir magnetic bud vase, a $10 salon gift certificate and more fabulous goodies.

While you may no longer be of the appropriate age to sit on Santa’s lap, the holiday season imparts a special sort of of magic that has even adults looking up the chimney after midnight. And of course, it’s the magic of gift giving too. Our packed Chicago streets and stores prove that giving is just as much fun as receiving. However, those who were raised right already know that the spirit of the season is not just about material possessions—no matter how badly you want that pair of Jimmy Choo shoes.
On December 10th, big name retailer Macy’s on State Street is encouraging locals and visitors to take some time out from shopping to inspire kindness and dare we say, good will to men! Macy’s National Believe Day isn’t just about letting someone go ahead of you in line at the check-out. In fact, the entire day is filled with musical entertainment, various demonstrations and more. Take a break from all the hustle and bustle to enjoy some of the events taking place this Friday!

Believe it or not, holiday shopping is just around the corner. Soon, we’ll be hearing winter tunes, sipping gingerbread lattes, and watching the yule log on TV. The good news is that if you are shopping downtown, there are some amazing eats to distract you from the piles of receipts you will amass.
Tucked away on the seventh floor of Macy’s State Street is Seven On State, the best of all possible food courts. Here you can sit at real tables, in real chairs, and eat fantastic food. They have servers come around to refill water and soft drinks, and the chow is not your average food court fare.
The most popular stop at Seven on State (and possibly my favorite) is Frontera Fresco, brought to you by Chicago’s beloved Rick Bayless. This king of mexican fare delivers fresh tacos, quesadillas and more. The food isn’t greasy and is absolutely packed with flavor. The chips and guacamole make a great side.
Next door is Marc Burger, from Marcus Samuelson. You can’t go wrong with his great meals, but if you want something a little different, try the chicken sandwich with avocado mayonnaise. Yum!
Not to be outdone, Takashi’s noodles is the presence of Takashi Yagihashi. His ramens are sure to be the perfect warmer as the cold weather starts to set in.
Also on the floor are sandwich and salad stations. They may not have flashy TV chefs behind them, but they still deliver great food, and the lines are often much easier to manage!
All in all, you can’t go wrong at Seven on State. Make sure to stop in next time you are shopping, but be aware that they are only open for lunch.
Seven on State is located on the seventh floor of Macy’s – 111 N. State Street.

We’re not trying to be New York, but us Chicagoans take fashion seriously too—especially when it comes to our established and emerging designers. If you’re not familiar with Fashion Focus Week, it’s a collaboration between the Chicago Office of Tourism, the Chicago Fashion Incubator, Macy’s, Mario Tricoci, StyleChicago.com, and four of the city’s top fashion design schools.
And to start things off, Macy’s is hosting the first event of the week which consists of a runway show showcasing 14 of the Chicago Fashion Incubator’s designers-in residence, a VIP pre-show reception and an after-party. While we hear it’s already sold out (sorry), there are plenty other shows and events taking place this week which can be found by checking out the Fashion Focus website.

Fashion’s Night Out is today, and some of the stores have already started in on the festivities. Be sure to check out the main Fashion’s Night Out website, and my post on Water Tower Place, to ensure that you aren’t missing out on of the great in-store promotions and events.
While a lot of the activity is taking place along Michigan Avenue, carve some time for a visit to Macy’s on State Street. From 6PM-11PM, Vicki Gunvalson from the Real Housewives of the OC will greet shoppers and sign her new book at the exclusive FNO shopping party.
Shoppers at both Macy’s on State Street and Macy’s Water Tower can engage in mini-makeovers, music, informal modeling and special shopping incentives, all in celebration of the second annual Fashion’s Night Out.

Those who have familiarized themselves with Macy’s as only a shopping destination get a real treat this time of the year. It’s time for Macy’s annual Glamorama spectacular! The four-city tour hits Chicago at the Chicago Theatre on Friday, August 13 at 8PM, and is highlighted with performances by Grammy award-winning singer Macy Gray (as seen in the photo courtesy of Giuliano Bekor) and newcomer Eric Hutchinson.
Unlike New York Fashion Week, all the clothes shown in the elaborate fashion show aren’t out of reach. In fact, there as close as a trip to Macy’s. This year, designer Chris March— known by millions as a finalist on Season 4 of Bravo’s “Project Runway”—is using his talents to create a fantasy-like setting. “The show will be a magical experience of high fashion set against a multidimensional theatrical production with surprises at every turn, introducing 3-D holographic effects, elements of flight, visual vistas and a sampling of controller-free entertainment by Kinect™ for Xbox 360®, all set against a larger than life LED video wall,” says Mike Gansmoe, Macy’s VP of Special Productions. For the first time in the event’s history, the runway show will integrate a dynamic dance segment choreographed by Brian Friedman, famed dance choreographer to the stars and choreographer/judge on “So You Think You Can Dance?”
And speaking of dancing, you’ll have plenty of time to show off your own skills on the dance floor at the post-party taking place on the 7th floor of Macy’s on State Street. After you’ve worked up an appetite—and thirst—make your way around the 25 bars and food stations stocked with a bevy of choices—though we’re secretly going to start with a stroll through the candy garden.
Proceeds from Glamorama benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through RMHC®-CNI by calling 630-623-2309 or by visiting RonaldHouseChicago.org. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000, ticketmaster.com or through The Chicago Theatre box office. Tickets range in price from $50 to $1,000.

Another summer, another slate of great music in an art-filled setting: the Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Tuesdays on the Terrace” series offers visitors the chance to hear music every week, overlooking the impressive sculpture garden. The shows are free – thank Macy’s for picking up the tab – and you can even bring your own lawn chair (although you can also rent one from the museum for $5.) Outside food and beverages are not permitted, but a full menu awaits, ranging from burgers and franks to the $22 buffet laid out by Puck’s Café, the MCA’s restaurateur. (To reserve a table for dinner, call 312-397-4034.)
Performances take place every Tuesday night from 5:30 till 8 through the end of September, with WHPK jazz authority Al Carter Bey and jazz hosts from WDCB acting as hosts. On a clear June evening or in the hazy dusk of August, you can’t beat this picture: patrons arrayed on the MCA terrace and the garden lawn, winding down or ratcheting up to the sounds of jazz. And in case of rain, the music goes on anyway, inside the Puck’s Café space.
Here’s the schedule through the middle of August (click here for entire lineup):
July 13: AACM reedman Mwata Bowden
July 20: bassist and new-jazz composer Matt Ulery
July 27: splashy young trumpeter Corey Wilkes
Aug 3: cellist and new-music improviser Fred Lonberg-Holm
Aug 10: former Miles Davis keyboardist Robert Irving III
Aug 17: vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz’s trio
And the Museum collection remains open later than normal on Tuesdays, too – till 8 PM – so you can combine a set or two of music with an hour or two of art-viewing, and leave with most of your senses enhanced.
Considering summer just began, we have a hard time thinking about the end – that is, unless we’re thinking about Macy’s annual Glamorama fashion spectacular. Taking place on Friday, August 13, Glamorama 2010 promises to bring fashion, fantasy, music and magic to the Chicago Theater, complete with the usual star-studded talent, special effects and innovative technology.
To kick things off, socialite Candace Jordan and a committee of her fashion forward pals will host the official launch party for Glamorama 2010 on Thursday, June 10 from 7PM to 10PM at Prairie Productions. Guests will enjoy apps by George Jewel, cocktails and a performance by rising stars & Hidden Beach recording artist, Naturally 7, presented by Akoo. Only 200 guests will be admitted into this exclusive soiree, so if you want to attend, you must purchase a special early-bird priced ticket to Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama show and post-party by Thursday, June 10. You snooze, you lose.
To purchase early-bird special tickets (10% savings):
Early-bird priced tickets can be purchased for $155 to $900 (regularly $175 to $1000) at RonaldHouseChicago.org or by calling 630.623.2309.

We’ve forwarded our clocks and spring has officially arrived. It still may be too chilly outside to see any new buds popping to the surface, but it’s time for Macy’s Annual Flower Show and nothing beats the mix of nature and a spring wardrobe shopping spree.
It’s almost hard to believe, but there are more than 15,000 individual potted plants covering pretty much every flat elevated surface on the store’s first floor! But the Macy’s Flower Show is much more than gawking at a few bulbs. There will also be several cooking demonstrations by local chefs, guided tours from University of Illinois’ Master Gardeners, kids activities, floral demonstrations, floral tablescapes and more. Some new things for this year’s event include:
At least six vertical gardens
16-foot tall bird cage in the Walnut Room restaurant
Real hot-air balloon in the 1st floor atrium
A hanging mobile made from 5,000 balsa wood toy airplanes
A custom-printed carpet that runs an entire city block
The Flower Show is free to the public and open during regular store hours, Monday through Friday 10AM to 8PM, Saturdays 10AM-6PM and Sundays 11AM-6PM (closed on Easter). For additional information, guests contact Macy’s Express Desk at (312) 781-4884. Brochures for Flower Show are available at the Macy’s Express Desk near the Middle Atrium during the run of the show.
